About the HorseSense Levels Education Program

In our mission to develop well-rounded equestrians, in addition to riding lessons, we offer the HorseSense Levels Education Program as an add-on to our basic lesson program. This unique educational opportunity, appropriate for youth through adult students, teaches and tests riding skills, barn safety, and horse knowledge.  Our goal is to create compassionate, confident, and well-rounded equestrians. We emphasize safe practices and equine welfare while having lots of fun!

There are seven HorseSense Levels. The first Level, Red Level, introduces basic horse safety and handling. The final Level, Teal Level, prepares a student to manage an equine facility, maintain a performance horse, and/or pursue an equine career. When a student can demonstrate the objectives consistently and confidently, they will graduate to the next level, and be eligible for specific activities and events.

The HorseSense curriculum is also divided between Horsemanship Levels, HorseSense Levels, and HorseCentered Levels. These three tracks focus on different aspects of becoming a well-rounded equestrian.

The Horsemanship Levels concentrate on the rider’s ability in the saddle, culminating in a rider who is balanced, educated, and confident and can ride a schooled horse with skill on the flat, over fences, and in the open.

The HorseSense Levels focus on the extensive body of knowledge needed to care for and work with horses successfully, testing students on horse handling, veterinary, and stable management skills.

The HorseCentered Levels introduce training and groundwork skills, allowing students to apply training techniques in a wide variety of situations while increasing communication and connection with the horse.
