Kristina Runyeon, Riding Instructor at Concordia Stables, brings to you this Trainer Tip on the importance of a spring tack check.

Spring is here, and it's the perfect time to evaluate your tack as your horse transitions out of winter.
✔️ Saddle and Girth Fit: Shedding can reveal changes in weight and muscle tone that occurred over the winter, which may affect how your saddle fits. I recommend having a knowledgeable saddle fitter check your saddle to ensure appropriate spinal, wither, and trapezius clearance. They will also be able to check the width and balance of your saddle. A poorly fitting saddle can cause tripping, pain, and injury. When checking your girth, make sure it is clean and smooth to prevent rubs, and check the integrity of the buckles and any elastic.
✔️ Bridle and Bit: Make sure your bridle sits comfortably, with all buckles and bridle pieces positioned correctly on your horse’s head. If you're unsure of the fit, be sure to check with your instructor or trainer. Check your horse’s bit for wear and any rough spots — this can be very uncomfortable for your horse, so replace it if necessary!
✔️ Leather Care: Spring cleaning isn't just for the house — give your tack some love too! Clean, condition, and inspect straps, buckles, and stirrup leathers for wear and tear. Make any necessary repairs or replacements!
A tack check now can save you a lot of trouble down the road and keep your rides comfortable and enjoyable!
