Why Setting SMART Goals is Important for Riders

Kristina Runyeon, Riding Instructor at Concordia Stables, brings to you this Trainer Tip on the importance of setting clear and achievable goals.

In horse riding and training, setting clear and achievable goals can be a great tool. Whether you’re working on improving a transition, improving your own balance and position, or learning a new movement, having a specific goal in mind helps keep training focused and purposeful.

While there is a lot that can go into goal setting, a great way to structure your long-term and short-term goals is by using the SMART method—make goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

For example, instead of your short-term goal being, "I want to transition into the canter better," try setting a goal like, "By focusing on rhythm, balance, and responsiveness to aids during my rides, I will consistently ride balanced trot to canter transitions in 70% of attempts by the end of April.”

Of course different riders will have different requirements when it comes to consistency and balanced transitions, but the idea is that you make your own evaluation and keep working towards improvement, whatever that may mean to you. Note that when it comes to the time-bound part, be sure to stay flexible. While it’s great to have a time frame for progress, don’t feel pressured to meet every deadline exactly. Horses and humans learn at their own pace, and sometimes goals take longer than expected.

Breaking down goals into specific, achievable steps and celebrating each milestone along the way will help keep you focused and motivated!
